The Washington Post, citing people “familiar with the matter,” reports that President Obama’s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force is investigating possible criminal violations in connection with documentation errors reported by at least five mortgage servicers.
The task force -- which is made up of more than 20 federal agencies, including the Justice Department, the U.S. Treasury, HUD, and every national banking regulator -- is looking into whether servicers broke federal laws in the paperwork debacle and whether they misled federal housing agencies, such as the GSEs and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), in the process. Mail and wire fraud may also be an issue, according to the Post.
